What does the word "heritage" mean to you?
You may be wondering what this question has to do with the topic of personal identity, but heritage is about the permanence of our sense of identity, of our sense of selfhood.
With so many changes in the world around us, and within ourselves and others, we need something permanent to give stability to our lives.
Heritage is important to feelings of inner peace. You may have visited my peace blog, Quieter Living, where you will have seen many reflective articles about aspects of peace in both the inner and outer worlds.
Being comfortable with our own sense of identity is a key factor in feeling at peace with ourselves, in other words, having inner peace. The other factor to consider is the identity of others.
How does your heritage differ from that of other people? What is your heritage? What is world heritage? What is the heritage we all share?
Our heritage as humans is an important factor in world peace. Preserving heritage places, artifacts, writings and ideas is just a small part of that. To say something is of heritage value means that it has an important, permanent place in either our own identity as individuals, or as part of our identity as humans.
Wishing you peace...
